The Process

Every piece of furniture shown on this website began with a client’s idea, sometimes a clear vision, other times just a spark of inspiration.

Often, a client wants to reproduce an antique that is unattainable due to cost or because it’s housed in a museum. In those cases, I’m asked to build a faithful reproduction. Other times, a piece may be the perfect style, but the wrong size. In these situations, I carefully adjust the proportions to suit the space and function, while staying true to the spirit of the original.

Occasionally, a design may need subtle enhancements; such as a refined molding or a better foot to elevate the look. And sometimes, a client simply has a general concept and we work together to design something truly unique.

1. Initial Consultation & Design

The design process typically begins with email, text, and phone conversations. You're also welcome to visit the shop.

After discussing your needs and inspiration, I’ll provide a rough estimate. If that falls within your budget, I’ll begin a series of drawings to refine the design. Once finalized, a firm quote is provided.

To reserve a spot in my schedule, a 50% deposit is required.

2. Selecting the Lumber

One of the most rewarding parts of the process is selecting the perfect wood. I maintain a large inventory of rare, highly figured hardwood including matched sets cut from the same tree. These are stored and labeled together to ensure continuity in figure, color, and grain throughout your piece.

Matched lumber is ideal for showcasing highly figured drawer fronts, tabletops, and door panels. I also draw on a wide network of trusted wood suppliers I’ve built relationships with over the past 30 years to find the ideal material for every project.

Extreme care is taken in this stage, it’s foundational to the beauty and integrity of the finished piece

3. Craftsmanship & Construction

Whether it’s a Mid-Century desk or a faithful reproduction of a Chippendale secretary, every piece is built by hand using time-honored joinery and the finest materials.

  • Joinery includes deep mortise and tenon and hand-cut dovetails.

  • For traditional pieces, machine marks are removed using hand planes and scrapers.

  • All turning and carving is done by hand, in-house.

No shortcuts; just honest, meticulous craftsmanship.

4. Finishing & Delivery

Most pieces are finished with multiple coats of shellac, each rubbed out by hand for depth and warmth. You can choose between a pristine new look or a more antique-inspired finish, complete with subtle distressing and burnishing to help it blend seamlessly into existing collections.

If you're local, you're welcome to pick up your piece at the shop, or I can personally deliver it. For shipped pieces, I recommend a one-month cure time after the final finish before crating. Shipping, crating, and delivery costs are quoted separately.

Final Touch

Each project is a collaboration; and it’s my goal to deliver not just a piece of furniture, but a future heirloom with a story worth telling.
