Witness Coffee Table

This witness coffee table, also known as a cookie slab table, is made from the cross section of a red maple tree stump and supported by a three legged splayed walnut base, built using deep mortise and tenon joinery. The natural drying checks in the top are stabilized with walnut inlaid bow ties.

The tree was originally planted by my client to commemorate his son’s christening. Nearly 45 years later, the tree declined and had to be removed. They asked the tree service to cut a cross section of the stump and contacted me to discuss how it might be used. I suggested elevating the slab in their garage to allow air to reach both sides and to call me in four years. They did, and after patiently waiting through the process, I built this table, which they ultimately gave to their son.

The glass top measures 38” in diameter and the table stands 19” high. If you have an idea for a meaningful custom piece, please email or call. Additional coffee table designs may be viewed here.
