Newport Three Shell Chest ch215
Benchmade in mahogany, this Newport style three shell chest of drawers is a faithful reproduction of an original 1765 example built by John Townsend in Newport, Rhode Island. Single wide board mahogany sides and a single wide board top are used for the case construction rather than several boards glued together. Overall measurements are 37 1/2 inches wide by 20 3/4 inches deep and 34 1/2 inches tall.
Built with traditional joinery, the case features hand cut dovetails as do the drawers. Solid matching mahogany stock is used to carve the drawer blocking. The top drawer features three hand carved shells, where the center concave shell is carved directly into the solid drawer front and the outer convex shells are applied exactly like the period chests. This beaded case sits on hand a carved blocked base molding and ogee bracket feet and is finished with several coats of hand rubbed shellac Solid cast brass authentic drawer pulls complete the piece.
Chests can be built to client specifications in a range of sizes, styles and wood species, including walnut, tiger maple, flame birch, cherry, and mahogany.
