New York Tall Post Bed B47
This Chippendale Tall Post Bed was built in a period size for the National Park Service. It is on public display in the Schuyler Estate in Schuylerville, NY which is part of Saratoga National Historical Park. It was built in mahogany and is available to order in any mattress size, and other wood species such as tiger maple, flame birch, cherry, or walnut are available. The footposts are turned by hand from three-inch thick solid stock sourced from the same tree for consistent color and grain. The footposts feature fluting, Marlboro feet and are topped with a four piece tester frame. The headposts are simple four sided tapers which was common in period beds. The rails were configured for a period correct canvas sacking bottom. Traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, secured with heavy bed bolts, creates a strong, long-lasting structure, and thick solid rails add rigidity. This bed could be custom built to suit your mattress thickness and preferred bedding height. A slat system can be added which eliminates the need for a box spring. The bed is finished with multiple coats of hand-rubbed shellac. Other bed designs can be viewed here.
